Botox and Fillers

How does the treatment work?

Botox binds to the nerve endings and prevents muscles from contracting by blocking the release of acetylcholine, which causes muscle contractions from the nerve.

What happens during the treatment?

After a consultation to discuss your needs, a treatment plan is formulated. For the treatment you are on a couch, in a supine position, and asked to frown. The practitioner will mark the areas for treatment. Small injections will be put into those areas after cleaning with antiseptic solution.

What does the treatment feel like?

The treatment is quick and simple. Most people liken the sensation to that of an ant sting. Usually people have treatment without the use of an anaesthetic as it is so quick, but cream is available if required.

Is it safe?

Yes. Botox is a purified and safe form of botulinum toxin which is licensed for use in treating many medical conditions,

Are there any side effects?

No serious side effects have been reported when using botox for cosmetic treatments. Minor side effects occur in a small number of clients and have usually disappeared within a few days. Immediately after injecting, there may be some mild swelling and redness but this should respond well to ice packs. There is the possibility of bruising but this can be covered with make-up. Rarely a drooping of the eyelid may occur which should resolve within a few weeks.

What results can i expect?

Botox is used for best results on the forehead, between the eyebrows and the ´crows feet´ at the edge of the eyes. You will see a visible difference in a few days. Botox will create a subtle improvement to your appearance, and this is its appeal. Friends may comment on how relaxed you look, but you will still be able to smile and use expressions.

What is Botox and how does it work?

Botulinum toxin, is a natural, purified protein that is used to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. It can also be used to treat medical conditions such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) also . It is the safest product, and it is certified in the medical and cosmetic field.

How do anti wrinkle injections work?

Anti-wrinkle injections contain a purified protein which binds to parts of the muscle that normally receive signals from nerve endings. This allows the muscle to relax, reducing the skin creases or wrinkles that is normally produced by the persistent contraction of these muscles. The effect should be noticeable within a few days, giving a fresh and rejuvenated appearance

What does the treatment involve?

While there is no real downtime associated with this treatment, it is important to note that you may encounter some slight bruising and swelling directly after treatment, due to the needle. This can easily be masked by makeup. There are no long-term side effects of having wrinkle injections, meaning patients can resume their usual activities straight away, and can also fly post-treatment.

Who would this treatment suit?

This treatment can be used on a wide range of patients, and is primarily used for skin rejuvenation and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. Botulinum toxin is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) for a short period of time. It can also be injected into the area around the side of the eyes to improve the look of moderate to severe crow’s feet lines.

Where are the injections most commonly used?

For many years, anti-wrinkle injections have been used for many medical problems such as uncontrolled muscle contraction in cerebral palsy and blepharospasm. It is now commonly used around the world for cosmetic enhancement of the face.

Q.Will BOTOX work for any wrinkle?
A. BOTOX works for dynamic wrinkles. Basically, the lines or wrinkles on our face, can be divided into static and dynamic lines. The static lines are those that are present in the face at rest - i.e., lines which are seen even when you are not making any facial expression. Dynamic lines, are those which appear only on making an expression - say, when you frown, laugh, raise your eyebrows up and so on. It is these dynamic lines that can be effectively treated with BOTOX. In general, wrinkles on the face need a combination approach. While BOTOX takes care of the dynamic lines, static lines are so much improved with a filler.

Q.Since it is a toxin, is not botulinum harmful?
A.The dose of botulinum toxin used for cosmetic indications is  less than about 100 units per session, which is 1/30th of the lethal dose in humans. In fact, patients with neurological conditions like spasticity receive upto 400 - 600 units per session with no adverse effects.

Q.Is it true that the best time for Botox is when the lines appear?
A. Botox is often used for lines and wrinkles formed by muscle movements like scowling, squinting, and raising eyebrows. Often by starting Botox preventatively, people and their muscles can actually learn to not make certain faces and expressions and contribute to worsening their lines. By not making certain expressions in the future, or making them less often, you may actually need less Botox or need it less often.

Q.  Is it true that If you stop getting Botox, it will make your wrinkles worse?
Nope. They´ll just go back to the way they were before.Botox will prevent your wrinkles from worsening while you keep up with your treatments. If you decide to stop having Botox treatments, you will slowly lose the relaxing effect of Botox and will resume the normal development of wrinkles with movement. Botox will not make wrinkles worse. And remember, Botox results are not permanent.

Q. Is Botox  something that only women get?

A. Every year it seems like more and more men are getting Botox , and it´s not necessarily the older men. We´re seeing a lot of men who are having these [Botox treatments] as early as in their 30s.Getting Botox can help “soften up this look to just give a more approachable appearance,” which can help men a great deal in business matters.

Q.What are Fillers and how do they work?

A. As we age, the natural collagen and elastin in the skin lessens, as cells lose their ability to produce more of their youthful component. The skin becomes dryer, thinner and less able to fix itself. When we are born, we have plentiful amounts of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) in our body, but as we get older this store of HA diminishes, leaving the skin less well supported, and so lines and wrinkles develop. By lifting and smoothing targeted folds and wrinkles by adding subtle volume, dermal fillers can make a difference to a person´s appearance, giving them a fresher look.

The treatment of wrinkles with dermal filler will usually involve injecting this naturally occurring product (HA) through a tiny needle. The discomfort is minimal as the treatment does not take long to perform. The aesthetic outcomes of treatments with dermal filler are seen immediately after the treatment. Treating wrinkles with dermal filler is fast, leaving no scars.

Q. Where are dermal fillers most commonly used?

While many areas may benefit from this treatment, we believe that facial rejuvenation with fillers should provide a subtle and natural improvement. Often, they can be used in conjunction with other surgical and non-surgical treatments to achieve the best possible result.

How are dermal filler injections given?

Q.What does the treatment involve?

A.The procedure takes around 30-45 minutes and patients can expect to notice the effects for as long as 18 months after treatment. There is even precedence of results lasting up to 24 months in some cases, however, treatment with fillers is completely reversible. With any injectable treatment, there can be some slight bruising or swelling that accompanies it. This should not persist much longer than a day, and is easily coverable with makeup.

Are there any side effects of dermal fillers?

Q.What results does the treatment aim to provide?

A.The results should be subtle, leaving our friends and family believing that we are simply looking our best and great for our years. Treatment lasts between 18-24 months but, naturally, towards the end of this period the effects begin to gradually soften, so there is no dramatic change. When the effects begin to soften, we aim to ‘top up´ the treatment.

How does the treatment work?

The cosmetic filler used contains hyaluronic acid. This is a natural sugar that is found in the skin, where its function is to maintain volume and pliability. The hyaluronic acid combines with molecules of water to increase in size, therefore filling the line in the face.

What happens during the treatment?

After assessment and pre-treatment photographs, the filler will be injected into the site using small fine needles. This will take anything from 15 - 45 minutes depending on the areas treated.

What does the treatment feel like?

Most treatments are quick and simple and produce minimal discomfort. Most clients compare the sensation to that of an insect bite. However some areas that are naturally sensitive do require anaesthesia in the form of cream or injection if preferred.

Is it safe?

Yes, dermal fillers are safe to use in men and women between the ages of 18 and 65. Hyaluronic acid is fully biodegradable, which means that as the gel breaks down it turns into water and carbon dioxide and disappears unnoticed from your body. It is a non animal product which does not require skin testing.

Aare there any side effects?

Immediately after treatment there may be slight redness, swelling and tenderness in the treated area especially the lips. So the end result is not visible straight away. These minor effects are temporary and should disappear within a few days.

What results can i expect?

The main areas that benefit are the nasolabial lines, the lips, corners of the mouth, and the marionette lines that run from the mouth down the chin. You will not have a ´trout pout´ but a subtle enhancement (if lips are treated), and lines treated will be filled out creating a smoother, more youthful appearance.

What darkens skins colour?

Exposure to Ultra-Violet (UV) in sunlight causes melanocytes to expand and produce more melanin (a suntan). UV can also damage skin cells, to cause a range of skin problems. There are also genetic and other environmental factors that can affect skin pigment.
